Japanese Bathtubs - A Long History of Bathing in Luxury

If you look into Japanese history, you will find that bathing has been an important part of their culture for years; in fact, bathing was important there long before it every became so important in the West. In the beginning bathing was a type of Buddhist cleansing ritual for the Japanese, and they had a special type of tub that the used for these bathing rituals. Later, these Japanese bathtubs became popular in other places around the world, and many people in the Unites States are beginning to use them today. However, before you purchase one of these tubs, you may want to be a bit more familiar with what the tub is like.

Smaller in Size
First of all you will find that Japanese bathtubs are much smaller in size than regular Western tubs. Instead of laying down as you would in a traditional tub, the Japanese tubs are made with a seat for you to sit on. You sit in this tub, and the tub almost resembles a rather large barrel. This design enables you to soak in water that is almost up to your neck, which provides you with a much better soak.

Deeper than Traditional Tubs
Not only will you find that Japanese bathtubs are smaller than traditional western tubs, but you will also find that they are much deeper as well. When you sit in the seat of the tub, the water will literally be up to your neck. Since the water is so deep, it allows you to be able to soak your entire body, where other tubs may only be able to help you soak a part of your body.

Difference in Bathing Temperature
You will also find that usually the Japanese soaked at much higher temperatures than we are used to. Japanese bathtubs are made to withstand hotter water, and if you want to have the true Japanese bathing experience you may want to consider turning up the temperature of your bath water. Sure, you can choose whatever temperature you want, but for the full Japanese bathing effect the water should be quite hot.

It is also important to note, that traditionally, the Japanese never actually washed themselves in these tubs. Usually they would wash before they ever got in the tub, to keep them cleaner and to allow other people to soak in the same water after them. While you can bathe in these tubs, you may want to have a shower in the bathroom as well if you decide to use a Japanese tub in your bathroom. Once you purchase one of these tubs, no doubt you will enjoy getting in and having a nice, hot, luxurious soak in your new tub.
